MSU enrollment expected to be around 49,700

Enrollment at Michigan State University for the 2014 academic year is expected to be around 49,700 students, a slight increase over last year.

The preliminary figures were presented to the MSU Board of Trustees at its Aug. 29 meeting.

Last year’s enrollment was around 49,300.

According to the preliminary numbers, MSU remains a popular university choice among high school graduates. This year MSU received more than 32,200 applications. This year’s entering class is expected to be about 7,890 students, slightly higher than last year.

Other preliminary enrollment statistics include:

* About 20 percent of the university’s entering class is expected to be students of color, a five-year high.

* The average grade point average of the entering class is expected to be approximately 3.6, while the average ACT scores will be around 25.5. Both are within the range of prior years.

* There are expected to be around 38,500 undergraduate students this year. About 77 percent are from Michigan.

The official count of enrolled students will occur on Sept. 22, one-quarter of the way through the fall semester.
