At its June 21 meeting, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees adopted the 2013-14 budget development guidelines, which included an average 2.8 percent increase in tuition.
It is the lowest tuition hike since 2005.
Under the plan, tuition for in-state, lower division students – freshmen and sophomores – will increase by 1.9 percent, while tuition for in-state, upper division students – juniors and seniors – will go up by 3.6 percent. See story here.
Following are other actions taken by the board at its June meeting.
The board authorized the university to proceed with a renovation project on the north end of Spartan Stadium. The work will include new locker rooms, media rooms, concessions and renovated gates.
The board approved the appointment of Steven Hanson as interim dean of International Studies and Programs. Hanson is assistant dean of ISP and professor and chairperson of the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics. He will succeed Jeff Riedinger, who is leaving MSU to accept a similar position at the University of Washington.
The board approved the naming of nine MSU professors as University Distinguished Professors. One of the highest honors the university bestows upon a faculty member, it recognizes his or her achievements in the classroom, laboratory and community. See story here.
The board approved the appointment of Denise Maybank as vice president for student affairs and services. She has served as interim vice president since 2011.
The board authorized the university to proceed with an upgrade on Munn Ice Arena’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The project also calls for replacement of the arena’s ice making system.
The board authorized the administration to move forward with planning for development of the 7.85 acres of land MSU bought in downtown Grand Rapids in January 2012 for $12 million. The property acquisition is part of the university's and the College of Human Medicine's statewide growth in its research portfolio.
Two buildings that were part of the old Michigan State Police Post will be renovated under a resolution adopted by the board. The two buildings – a warehouse and an office building – will get new lights, fire-safety equipment and other renovations.
The board approved the acceptance of a gift of 2.25 acres of land located in southwest Michigan. Located in Delton Township, near MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station, the land will be used for research purposes.
