Professor takes helm of American Physiological Society

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Susan Barman, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology in the College of Human Medicine, has taken over as the 85th president of the American Physiological Society, a professional group with nearly 11,000 members focused on the physiological sciences.

Barman, elected as president-elect a year ago, took over as president at the society's 125th anniversary last month in San Diego.

She is chairperson of the College of Human Medicine's Graduate Studies Committee and heads up her department's faculty advisory committee, a position to which her colleagues have elected her to serve in 11 of the past 14 years.

Barman also is a recipient of the Outstanding University Woman Faculty Award from the Faculty Professional Women's Association of MSU and a College of Human Medicine Distinguished Faculty Award winner.
