18 years and counting: MSU education programs best in U.S.

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University’s graduate programs for educators, nuclear physicists, psychologists and businesspeople are some of the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 edition of Best Graduate Schools.

For the 18th year in a row, the College of Education’s graduate programs in elementary education and secondary education were No. 1 in the magazine’s rankings, released publicly today. The run started in 1995, when Bill Clinton was serving his first term as president, Google was three years from reality and gas averaged $1.15 a gallon.

MSU’s nuclear physics and industrial/organizational psychology programs also were No. 1, while the supply chain/logistics program in the Broad College of Business was No. 2, behind only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The College of Education was in rare company, with seven of its graduate programs ranking in the top five. That includes a second-place ranking for its graduate program in higher education administration – a key focus of the college’s new dean, Donald E. Heller.

“We strive to ensure that the teaching, research and outreach conducted by the faculty, students and staff in the College of Education are of the highest quality and are helping to improve education and related professions in the nation and beyond our borders,” said Heller, who came to MSU from Penn State on Jan. 1. “While this is only one validation of our work, it is affirming for us to be recognized by our peers who are surveyed by U.S. News.”

MSU also had top 10 rankings in African history, criminology and veterinary medicine.
