Staff profiles: Kevin Lavery

Everyday Kevin Lavery has the opportunity to make something out of nothing.

As news director for WKAR, which is part of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, Lavery supervises a five-person news team and two sports producers who have daily shows.

Lavery and his team specialize in long form, in-depth, locally produced news stories. They aim to share at least one locally produced news story every day.

"We want to give our audience something of quality and value that is locally relevant to their lives, interesting and hopefully engaging," Lavery said.

A typical day involves lots of planning and oftentimes many meetings. With public broadcasting, there is more time to develop stories more deeply, focusing on larger issues rather than events, Lavery said.

Lavery enjoys creating something that is artistic and informative - recreating an experience for listeners.

"People depend upon reporters to translate an experience, event or issue that they were not present for into something relevant and meaningful that they can understand," Lavery said.

Lavery also appreciates that he gets to share his experience with people that also hold his values and passion for news and creativity at WKAR.
