MSU Music presents ground breaking chamber ensemble

yMusic, an ensemble of six instrumentalists from New York City, will be performing at the Fairchild Theatre in the MSU Auditorium at 8 p.m., April 6.

This groundbreaking group is known for its unique instrumentation; a string trio, flute, clarinet and trumpet, with members also playing horn and guitar on various pieces. In keeping with their pioneering style, their unique program of selections will be announced from the stage.

Hailed by NPR’s Fred Child as “one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music,” this ensemble flourishes in the overlap between pop and classical. Since their inception in 2008, yMusic has striven to bring a classical chamber music aesthetic outside the norms of traditional concert presentations. Their virtuosic execution and unique configuration have caught the attention of high profile artists.

Recently the group has attracted attention from many prominent musicians and composers, collaborating with artists such as Paul Simon and Ben Folds. Each of the six group members has toured nationally with various classical, modern and indie ensembles. Together they have released three solo albums, the most recent title, "First", is made up of works by composer and artist Son Lux and producer Thomas Bartlett, released in Feb. 2017.

In addition to their concert, the musicians will be holding a series of master classes on April 5 and April 6 for students and others to engage in. There will be discussions on instrumental and compositional careers and an entrepreneurship workshop. All master class events are free and open to the public.
