MSU joins forces with Red Cross for flood relief

In the wake of the worst flooding Michigan has seen the last three decades, Michigan State University joined forces with the local Red Cross to deliver meals and to support impacted families across the state.

"Families who have been impacted by the flooding can begin focusing on cleanup, and they won't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. Donations like those of MSU's Kellogg Catering ensures families can focus on what really matters. These meals will help residents all across Michigan as they begin to recover from the flooding," said Kelly King, executive director for the Mid-Michigan Red Cross.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor issued a state of emergency on February 22, and the record water levels prompted officials to block high-traffic roads, for businesses to close operations, and left many families with standing water and without power. Many MSU campus facilities shut down as well, and crews worked around the clock to build an emergency wall spanning 1,250 feet along the Red Cedar River.

Taking action to help families, MSU's Kellogg Catering began working with the Red Cross to provide meals for up to 300 families displaced or impacted by the recent flooding.

"Caring about and for our community is a key tenant of MSU's land-grant heritage. The families affected are our friends, neighbors and colleagues. Helping them in this time of need is important to us," said Vice President for MSU Auxiliary Enterprises Vennie Gore.

MSU employees helped distribute meals beginning February 26, and deliveries will continue through Friday, March 2.
