Opera Theater to present Hansel and Gretel

The Michigan State University Opera Theater will open its 2017-2018 season with the fairy tale classic “Hansel and Gretel,” Nov. 15-18 and Nov. 19 at the Fairchild Theater in the MSU Auditorium.

Composed in Germany in the 1890s, “Hansel and Gretel” was written by Engelbert Humperdinck. It is based on a story originally included in the tales of the Brothers Grimm. The opera, which will be performed in English, features a small cast, along with the MSU Children’s Choir and Capital Ballet Theater.

Steven Mosteller will be guest conducting the Symphony Orchestra for the production. The opera is directed by Melanie Helton, professor of voice.

“This work is a wonderful way to introduce everyone to opera,” Helton said. “The familiar fairytale and accessible music make this a delightful production for all audiences.”

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, age 60 and older, and $5 for students with ID and anyone under 18, and can be purchased online, by phone, in person or at the door.
