Michigan State University sophomore Hannah MacDonald has earned a competitive scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
MacDonald is a student in the Honors College and is majoring in environmental geosciences in the College of Natural Science.
NOAA’s Hollings Scholarship provides financial support for one year of academic study and a full-time internship position at a NOAA facility during the summer. MacDonald is the seventh MSU student to receive a Hollings Scholarship.
“I am deeply honored to be an Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship recipient,” MacDonald said. “I am thrilled about the future opportunities that this scholarship program will provide me. This scholarship will allow me to further pursue my education and follow my passion for marine conservation.”
MacDonald is from Alpena and is a graduate of Alpena High School. She is an education programmer for the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and was named volunteer of the year in 2014. MacDonald is also the founder of Plastics F.L.O.A.T. (For The Love Of Alpena Today).
At MSU, MacDonald is a member of the Residential Initiative on the Study of the Environment and currently interns at the Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory.
MacDonald has also conducted sea turtle research in the Bahamas.
