Seven Arabic students from Michigan State University have won the Flagship Scholarship.
The Arabic Languages Flagship Program collaborates with the Language Flagship, seeking to graduate students with superior level proficiency in Arabic in order to create the next generation of professionals.
The scholarship will allow the students to spend a year in Morocco, at the Arabic Flagship site, in order to advance their Arabic learning. While in Morocco, they also get a chance to take courses at Moulay Ismail University and do an internship, in addition to intensive classes in Arabic.
“Studying Arabic includes so much more than just the language and I have found myself immersed in captivating culture where strong community ties, a rich history and deeply rooted traditions are embedded in the culture’s everyday life,” said Flagship student Allison Tumas. “Arabic inspires me every day to step out of my comfort zone, expand my cultural knowledge and to further understand those with beliefs that are different from my own.
“The students thank the Department of Linguistics and Language and the college of Arts and Letters for their support of the program,” she said.
