MSU’s Abrams Planetarium new show highlights African astronomy

Michigan State University’s Abrams Planetarium is now featuring “Skywatchers of Africa,” a new show that examines African cultural uses of the sky that developed throughout history.

For thousands of years, Africans have used their knowledge of the sky to build their societies, shape their spiritual lives and meet their physical needs of survival. “Skywatchers of Africa” celebrates our shared human experience with astronomy.

This feature show will be presented on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. It runs through mid-April.

The planetarium’s family show, “Perfect Little Planet,” is shown on Sundays at 2:30 p.m., and will show at that time every Sunday through early March. The show follows a family from another star system as they explore some of the features of our galaxy’s planets.

Abrams installed a new star projector in 2014 – the Digistar 5, which provides planetarium-goers with sharper, crisper images.
