Summertime in East Lansing is officially coming to an end, as more than 17,000 on-campus residents settle in to their campus homes at Michigan State University in preparation for the 2016-2017 academic year.
International students will arrive Aug. 20 and a majority of new and returning students will move in between Aug. 27 and Aug. 29. Over the next two weekends, students and their families will be greeted by fellow students, faculty, staff, alumni, community volunteers and friends of MSU.
Family housing at 1855 Place, MSU’s new on-campus apartment community, opened its doors on Aug. 10 with more than 75 student families among its first residents.
Student athletes, employees and residents of Spartan Village and Owen Hall began arriving as early as July.
“We love welcoming new Spartans on move-in day,” said Vennie Gore, vice president of auxiliary enterprises at MSU. “It’s special for us, introducing them to their new home on campus and helping get them settled. It’s where we begin providing them the outstanding Spartan experiences that can help them to be academically successful. Everyone – from our head chefs to RAs and facilities team members – pitch in to lend a hand.”
Move-in and the start of the school year is a joyous time for students and their family members.
“Our staff have been working diligently all summer to prepare for the next class of Spartans that will be living on campus,” said Ray Gasser, interim director of Residence Education and Housing Services at MSU. “It is critical for us to create an environment and a team that supports each one of our residents to ensure a positive transition and long-term success here at Michigan State University.”
On move-in day, families will be invited to enjoy a complimentary meal at one of the university’s dining halls in their student’s new MSU Neighborhood.
“We look forward to welcoming our new and returning Spartan students. Culinary Services cultivates all areas of the Spartan experience—academic, intercultural, health and wellness, and social,” said Guy Procopio, director of Culinary Services. “Their new home includes recently renovated dining halls and retail locations, offering more comfortable environments to dine, study or socialize. Through culinary excellence, we create experiences that assist in advancing knowledge and transforming lives as students stay and dine with us.”
MSU’s five neighborhoods are made up of 27 residence halls, three apartment communities, 10 residential dining halls, five engagement centers and much more.
“For us, move-in is an exciting time for not only the students and their families, but for all of us here at Michigan State who want to help these students find their niche and matriculate from this great institution.” said Gasser.
