MSU hosts event to call attention to construction-site falls

As part of the U.S. Department of Labor’s OSHA National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, Michigan State University will host a stand-down event Wednesday at its Facility for Rare Isotope Beams construction site.

FRIB is under construction on the MSU campus and will be a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science scientific user facility, supporting the Office of Nuclear Physics.

Hosted by MSU, Barton Malow and the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the event is designed to raise awareness of preventing fall hazards in construction.

It is from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the FRIB construction site, 640 South Shaw Lane.

There will be demonstrations of proper fall-protection gear and employee training on fall protection safety awareness.

Remarks will be given by MIOSHA Acting Director Bart Pickelman, Barton Malow Safety Supervisor John Pike and Superintendent Josh Pettijohn.

Parking for media is available in the Wharton Center parking ramp, entering from the visitor entrance off Shaw Lane.

Media are asked to check in at the Barton Malow trailer 1 by 11:30 a.m. to get the required personal protective equipment. Long pants and sturdy, closed-toed shoes should be worn to access the site.

Falls are a leading cause of death for construction workers in the state and the nation. Between 2010 and 2015, nearly 41 percent of the fatalities in Michigan’s construction industry consisted of falls.
