MSU experts can discuss Supreme Court's affirmative action ruling

MSU's Philip Pucillo and Patricia Marin can discuss the June 23 ruling by the Supreme Court that the University of Texas may consider the race of student applicants in a limited way to build a diverse student body.

Philip Pucillo is a lecturer in the Michigan State University College of Law and can be reached at (734) 904-4459 and pucillo@law.msu.edu

Patricia Marin is assistant professor in MSU's College of Education and can be reached at (805) 390-1420 and pmarin@msu.edu

Says Marin of the ruling: "This is a great day for colleges and universities across the country. The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed, once again, that universities can consider race/ethnicity among the factors it uses when admitting a class of students. This allows institutions to reap the educational benefits of a diverse student body which is central to their missions. This diversity benefits ALL students. The efforts of many scholars around the country whose research supported the legal arguments clearly made an important difference here. This is a huge win for higher education on all fronts."
