Get to know Southwest Michigan’s native plant species

Southwest Michigan has so many fascinating native plants, and there’s so much to know. Experts from the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station will lead a five-week field botany course about native plants this summer.

The course is open to plant enthusiasts of all skill levels, from hobbyist gardeners to professional plant biologists, and will feature both classroom sessions and field trips. Participants can get an up-close look at 40-50 diverse plants in forests and wetlands native to our region, learn botanical terminology and ecology, and gain greater plant identification skills.

The course will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday for five weeks, starting July 27 and ending August 24. For participants interested in the Master Gardener program, the course has been approved for 15 Master Gardener credits.

Registration is $160 for KBS members and $180 for non-members, and registration is due no later than July 18. Participants can register online

The first classroom session will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 27 at the KBS Academic Building. For more information, visit kbs.msu.edu, or email communityrelations@kbs.msu.edu or call 269-671-2263.
