The lively string quartet Brooklyn Rider will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 1 at Fairchild Theatre.
Works for the concert include:
- Quartet No. 3 “Mishima” by Philip Glass
- String Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer” by Leoš Janáček
- “BTT” for String Quartet by Colin Jacobsen
- Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 by Ludwig van Beethoven
Brooklyn Rider members – Johnny Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen, violins; Nicholas Cords, viola; and Michael Nicolas, cello – recently enjoyed their 10th anniversary as an ensemble. The quartet has performed in such varied settings as Joe’s Pub in New York City, the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Todai-ji Temple in Japan, the Library of Congress and the South By Southwest Festival. In addition, they have been featured on NPR, founded the Stillwater Music Festival and are active participants in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.
In addition to the group’s performance on campus, Brooklyn Rider will be featured as guest panelists in a workshop on arts entrepreneurship, will be coaching student chamber groups in master classes and will play and critique student composers’ works. “It is an exciting opportunity to have musicians of this caliber looking at our music, not only because we get to hear it played, but because… they can offer perspective both from the angle of being a performer as well as having a vast knowledge of the genre,” said composition graduate student Benjamin Montgomery. “It gives us a chance to experiment and test out ideas in a unique way. I’m really excited to hear my music realized and also to get their feedback and ideas on what to improve.”
Brooklyn Rider is in residency at the College of Music Nov. 30-December 1. Residency activities are free and open to the public.
