Returning for its sixth year, the Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series will present “Music of Antonín Dvořák” at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 at MSU Auditorium’s Fairchild Theatre.
This concert will feature College of Music faculty and students coming together to perform a collection of music that celebrates Dvořák’s modest upbringing and devotion to folk songs.
The concert will begin with a large collaboration of musicians performing “Serenade for Winds and Strings, Op. 44.” This piece celebrates the wind band tradition of the 18th century while incorporating modern harmony and style.
Mezzo-soprano Jane Bunnell, a new addition to the MSU voice faculty, will then perform “Zigeunerlieder (Songs My Mother Taught Me), Op. 55.” Bunnell describes “Zigeunerlieder” as “a beautiful work that evokes the gypsy spirit.”
To conclude the performance, faculty artists will perform “Piano Quintet, Op. 81.” This piece leads the audience through alternating melancholy and joyful sections that urge the music towards its festive, folk-infused finale.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (age 60 and older) and $5 for students with ID and anyone under 18. Tickets may be purchased through the College of Music box office by calling 517-353-5340, online at http://www.music.msu.edu or at the door.
