Spartan Sports Journalism Classic returns to MSU

Some of the nation’s top sports reporters, who just happen to be graduates of Michigan State University, return to campus Friday for the annual Spartan Sports Journalism Classic.

Now in its third year, the all-day event will be held in various locations in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building.

The SSJC gives students interested in sports journalism careers an opportunity to hear from and network with alumni who are working as professional journalists at leading sports media outlets.

Co-hosting this year is former MSU basketball star Steve Smith. A member of the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame, a former NBA all-star and U.S. Olympic gold medalist, Smith now works as an NBA TV analyst.

Other participants include Mario Impemba, Detroit Tigers play-by-play, Fox Sports Detroit; Kelly Thesier Schultz, director of media communications for the Ladies Professional Golf Association; and Becky Hudson, senior editor for ESPN.

Highlights of the classic include talks by the participants in which they share experiences and insights with the students; “speed coaching” in which students meet one-on-one with the professionals; and a panel discussion titled “Tweet This: How Social Media is Changing Sports Coverage.”
