Re-launching Project 60/50

Michigan State University’s Project 60/50 is gearing up for another year of bringing social justice and human rights issues to the forefront.

Last year – its inaugural year – the campus and community initiative recognized the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with more than 200 events and activities.

“The first year of Project 60/50 really was rooted in commemorating the two anniversaries,” said John Beck, associate professor in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and founding member of the core team who launched Project 60/50. “As we re-launch, we recognize the need to carry on and move forward, to have deeper dialogues which can help us better understand and confront inequality and to work toward solutions which can truly advance equality and equity.”

The public is invited to attend the initiative’s re-launch event at 9:45 a.m. Sept. 25 in the Ballroom of the MSU Union. The kickoff will give attendees the chance to learn about Project 60/50 and to share ideas. MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon will offer opening remarks. In the spirit of Project 60/50, guests will be invited after the presentation to tour a new exhibit sponsored by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Services called, “Voices Rising” which is on display at the Mosaic Multicultural Center outside of the Ballroom.

This year’s theme is “Advancing Equality and Equity: Continuing the Community Conversation on Civil and Human Rights.”

Lunch will be provided. The event is free, but an RSVP is required.
