MSU to host first hackathon this weekend

For one weekend, 300 students from a wide range of disciplines and skill levels will team up to build creative, innovative technological projects from scratch.

SpartaHack is MSU’s first official hackathon, which will take place this weekend in Wells Hall. The 36-hour coding marathon is about learning and networking for a wide range of skill levels, from newcomer to the experienced programmer.

“Coding is the future of virtually everything, and as such, it is one of the most marketable skills that a student can possess,” said Lauren Bretz, sponsorship director and finance co-director of SpartaHack “We want to ensure that all MSU students represent this future.”

Participation is limited to students above 18 years of age or those who have left school within the 2014-2015 school year. Bretz said applications will be accepted until Friday, and SpartaHack would like to admit as many MSU students as possible.

“We have received nearly 600 applicants from throughout the U.S. and Canada, but less than 25 percent of them are from MSU,” Bretz said.
