MSU committed to sustainable agriculture, using local food sources

Having its roots as the pioneer land-grant institution, MSU has been a longtime leader in groundbreaking sustainable agriculture research and development.

As students and faculty are constantly working to tackle the world’s toughest agricultural issues, the MSU community’s access to sustainably sourced food is growing.

Through the Cultivate Michigan challenge — a challenge for Michigan institutions to source 20 percent of their food products from Michigan growers, producers and processers by 2020 — MSU has developed partnerships with over 150 local vendors and over 300 regional vendors. Some items found on campus include:

• Hudsonville Ice Cream, served at Holden Dining Hall and Brody Square.

• Woody's Oasis Mediterranean cuisine, found at Sparty's, Brody Square and Wilson Dining Hall.

• Paramount Coffee, offering organic and fair-trade options, served at Sparty's and available for staff and faculty through University Stores.

MSU offers educational opportunities encouraging sustainable food cycles and provides healthy, fresh options directly to campus through its own sustainable food programs. To learn more about MSU’s sustainability efforts, visit the Be Spartan Green website.
