MSU College of Natural Science Dean R. James Kirkpatrick honored

R. James Kirkpatrick, MSU professor of geological sciences and chemistry, and College of Natural Science dean, has received the 2015 Marilyn and Sturges W. Bailey Award, the highest honor of The Clay Minerals Society.

Kirkpatrick is being recognized for outstanding original scientific research and the impact of this research on the clay sciences.

“I am very honored to receive the Bailey award,” Kirkpatrick said. “Clays are very significant materials industrially and in the natural environment, and Michigan State has a long history of leadership in the field.”

Kirkpatrick received his doctorate in geology from the University of Illinois. Kirkpatrick has authored more than 250 research publications.

He will receive his award and present a lecture at the CMS Annual Meeting, which is being held July 5-10 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Clay Minerals Society is an international organization devoted to the study of clays and clay minerals.
