MSU celebrates the music of Maurice Ravel on March 16

The MSU College of Music celebrates the music of a man who lived mostly in solitude, but his music spread across the world. The Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series presents Maurice Ravel, Man of Mystery at 7:30 p.m. March 16 in the recently renovated Fairchild Theatre in MSU’s Auditorium.

Ravel, composer of the popular orchestral piece Boléro, led an extremely private life. Although he was one of the most highly regarded French composers of the time, much remains unknown of his personal life.

The performance, which is the final concert in this season’s West Circle Series, features eight MSU faculty artists.

Maurice Ravel, Man of Mystery has a dynamic concert program, including:

  • Mother Goose Suite, Panayis Lyras, piano; Derek Polischuk, piano
  • Piéce en forme de Habanera, James Forger, saxophone; Deborah Moriarty, piano
  • Sonatine, Richard Sherman, flute; Suren Bagratuni, cello; Chen-Yu Huang, harp
  • Piano Trio, Deborah Moriarty, piano; Dmitri Berlinsky, violin; Suren Bagratuni, cello

Concert guide: Kevin Bartig, associate professor of musicology

The West Circle Series, now in its fifth year, offers reserved seating only. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (age 60 and older) and $5 for students and anyone under 18. Tickets may be purchased online at www.music.msu.edu, or at the door.
