MSU a partner in National Geographic Detroit exhibit

Michigan State University is helping launch an exhibit of photographs taken from an upcoming National Geographic story that depicts the city of Detroit’s comeback since it fell into bankruptcy nearly two years ago.

The exhibit, in partnership with Bedrock Real Estate Services and Quicken Loans, will launch April 17 at the First National Building, 660 Woodward, Detroit. It will run through May 10.

The First National Building - owned by Dan Gilbert, founder and chairperson of Rock Ventures and Quicken Loans, and MSU alumnus - will house a newly transformed gallery space off of the first floor lobby facing Woodward Avenue. The exhibit will feature the work of photographer Wayne Lawrence and a newly created National Geographic map of Detroit.

Susan Goldberg, National Geographic editor-in-chief and MSU College of Communication Arts and Sciences alumna, said she’s excited to launch this exhibit in Detroit, allowing visitors to access the photography in the city these portraits reflect.

“National Geographic’s brand of storytelling has allowed us to produce an accurate, narrative exploration of what has happened to one of America’s most important cities,” Goldberg said. “The result is a story that, no matter how much you’ve read about Detroit, is a deeper, richer exploration of the city and its people than anyone else has done.”

The May 2015 issue of National Geographic, featuring “Taking Back Detroit,” is now available online and will hit the newsstands April 28th. To find the story, visit http://on.natgeo.com/1CB3NVo.
