The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary will host a family event, featuring a red-tailed hawk and a great horned owl or barred owl at a raptor meet-and-greet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on April 12.
“Raptors are unique hunting and flying machines,” said Lisa Duke, sanctuary manager. “The birds of prey are a popular exhibit at the Sanctuary, and this afternoon is to further educate the public about these exceptional birds.”
Duke said the birds have been trained to calmly appear before large groups through falconry techniques. Every bird of prey at the sanctuary has a permanent injury, ranging from broken wings to missing eyes. These raptors live at the sanctuary as ambassadors for their species.
Sanctuary member fees for the event are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors (62+) and college students, $3 for children (2-17) and free for children younger than two. Non-member fees are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and college students, $5 for children and free for children under two. Event fee also includes admission to the sanctuary’s trails for the day.
