During “Sustaining the Vision,” an annual open house, the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station will honor the legacy of W.K. Kellogg. At this event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 19th, the W.K. Kellogg Manor House and Kellogg Bird Sanctuary will offer free admission to celebrate the birthday of W.K. Kellogg.
Visitors can see raptors, migrant waterfowl and upland game birds along three miles of hiking trails lined with educational signage telling the story of W.K. Kellogg and the facility. Corn to feed the waterfowl will be available during these hours.
From 1 to 5 p.m. the historical Manor House will host free guided tours. Beginning every 20 minutes, docents will lead you through the former cereal magnate¹s home while describing the history, which makes the Manor a community legacy. No reservations required.
Kellogg was born on April 7, 1860. He died on October 6, 1951 at the age of 91.
Between 1925 and 1927, Kellogg built the Manor House on Gull Lake as a summer residence and established the nearby Bird Sanctuary as a refuge for Canada Geese, and other waterfowl. Kellogg donated the Bird Sanctuary and Manor House, and the remaining land that makes up the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, to Michigan State College (now University) to support education and environmental research.
W.K. Kellogg Biological Station is Michigan State University’s largest off-campus education complex and one of North America's premier inland field stations. KBS's mission is focused on ecological and environmental research, education and community outreach.
