Festival brings culturally diverse lineup to MSU, Lansing community for third year

A pair of Cuban jazz musicians, an acclaimed Mexican-born composer, a Columbian trio and a fusion of choral and orchestral voices will top the lineup for the third annual “Latin IS America” festival.

Coordinated by the MSU College of Music, the festival of music, dance and discussion celebrates the blending of Latin American and U.S. cultures by featuring nationally and internationally renowned guests. Events run for three weeks from April 11 through May 2.

“We’re exceptionally pleased with the mix of outstanding artists and scholars who are committed to making ‘Latin IS America’ a premier event for mid-Michigan,” said James Forger, dean of the MSU College of Music. “The festival has something for everyone to enjoy as we celebrate how music and art can transcend boundaries, merge culture and serve as a reflection of the rich diversity that surrounds us.”

“Latin IS America” evolved from a collaboration of university personnel, students and scholars who saw the need to acknowledge the effect that Latin American and U.S. cultures have on one another. All performances and activities of the “Latin IS America” festival are open to the public.

The festival offers a variety of free and ticketed events. For detailed information and tickets visit LatinISamerica.msu.edu.
