The State News was awarded an Online Pacemaker by the Associated Collegiate Press, the nation's largest student media organization, for having one of the nation's best student-run online news websites.
This is the first Online Pacemaker awarded to The State News but the 15th overall Pacemaker award the newspaper has received. A Pacemaker is considered the nation's most prestigious college media prize.
The award was for the 2013-14 school year. The State News also placed in eight individual prize categories including:
- Julia Nagy, second place, multimedia feature story
- Staff, third place, advertising brochure/rate card
- Khoa Nguyen, fourth place, spot news picture
- Erica Tedesco, fifth place, in-house advertisement
- Rebecca Guajardo, Julia Nagy, Erin Hampton, honorable mention, newspaper page one design
- Justin Wan, honorable mention, feature picture
- Julia Nagy, Danyelle Morrow, Justin Wan, honorable mention, multimedia feature story
- Brandon Hankins, honorable mention, editorial cartoon
