Schubertiade celebration includes ‘Trout’ Quintet

Experience the genius of composer Franz Schubert as the MSU College of Music continues its fifth annual Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series with Schubertiade at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 in the recently renovated Fairchild Theatre in MSU’s Auditorium.

Seven performing artists from the MSU College of Music – Suren Bagratuni, cello; Dmitri Berlinsky, violin; Jack Budrow, double bass; Yuri Gandelsman, viola; and pianists Deborah Moriarty, Derek Polischuk and Zhihua Tang – will offer a program of Schubert’s masterworks from the early nineteenth century.

Simply put, a Schubertiade is a party for chamber music lovers. These parties were often held in early 19th-century Vienna, often with Schubert in attendance, and were typically sponsored by wealthy aficionados of Schubert’s music. In present day, concerts and festivals of Schubert music are often given the label.

Schubert’s famous Piano Quintet in A major, better known as the “Trout” Quintet will be the musical centerpiece of the concert. Composed in 1819 when Schubert was only 22, it is considered one of chamber music’s greatest works.

Schubertiade has a dynamic concert program, including Impromptu No. 2 in A-flat and Impromptu No. 4 in A flat – Polischuk, piano; Sonatina in A minor – Berlinsky, violin and Tang, piano; and Piano Quintet in A major, “Trout” – Berlinsky, violin, Gandelsman, viola, Bagratuni, cello, Budrow, bass, and Moriarty, piano.

The concert guide is Dr. Kevin Bartig, musicology.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (age 60 and older), and $5 for students and anyone under 18. (Free “rush” seating for students, if available). Tickets may be purchased online at www.music.msu.edu, or at the door. The concert is generously sponsored by Beth and the late Dr. Milton Muelder.
