Sarah Kay visits Residential College in the Arts and Humanities

At 7 p.m. on March 26, Sarah Kay, spoken-word poet and educator, was the featured visiting artist for the Wednesday Night Live series at the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities.

The free performance was held in the RCAH Theater in Snyder-Phillips Hall and was open only to students, faculty, and staff within RCAH. During her time in the college on March 26, Sarah Kay also led an afternoon workshop titled, “Spoken Word Poetry 101.”

Kay has been performing her spoken word poetry since she was 14 years old. She was a featured poet on HBO’s Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry Jam in 2006, and that same year she was the youngest poet to compete in the National Poetry Slam.

Since then, Sarah Kay has shared her poetry in conferences, venues, and schools on six of the seven continents, and is currently yearning for Antarctica. She is perhaps best known for her talk at the 2011 TED conference, which garnered two standing ovations and has been seen more than 2million times online.

Sarah holds a master’s degree in The Art of Teaching from Brown University. Her first book, “B,” was ranked No. 1 Poetry Book on Amazon. Kay is the founder and co-director of Project V.O.I.C.E., an educational organization that uses spoken word poetry in schools and communities around the world as a way to encourage people to engage in creative self-expression.
