New student exhibition to open in Kresge Art Center

The Department of Art, Art History and Design exhibition “Interrupt” is opening Nov. 16 as part of A Day of Art at Michigan State University.

Featured in Gallery 101 and Gallery 114 in Kresge Art Center, the exhibition will continue through Nov. 21. Curated by assistant professor Paul Kotula, “Interrupt” includes painting, sculpture, installation and social practice art by six third- and two second-year MFA candidates enrolled in the newly offered MFA Professional Seminar. Biographical and artist statements will augment each artist’s work.

Before the exhibition opens, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at MSU will be offering guided tours from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A reception for “Interrupt” will begin at 1 p.m. with an introduction of the graduates followed by the opening of the exhibition. At 2:30 p.m. all MFA studios will be open. The events are free and open to the public.

The students in MFA Professional Seminar chose the title for this exhibition. “Interrupt” interrupts, as to stop that which is ongoing, like the cycle of work an artist produces, at least momentarily for the sake of an exhibition.

The exhibition includes the work of Kiel Darling, Keri Weber-Davies, Mary Fritz, David M. Johnson, Julie Johnson, Lane Kaufmann, Sarah Odens and Bruce Stepan.

Free and handicap accessible parking is available on Auditorium Road across the street from Kresge Art Center.

Shuttle Service will be available from Kresge Art Center to the Broad Art Museum from 10 to 11 a.m. and from the Broad Museum to Kresge Art Center from 12:30-1:00 p.m., however, the two destinations are also within walking distance.
