Muslim Mental Health conference begins April 24

Editor's Note: Registration for this year's conference has been extended through tomorrow, April 23.

The sixth annual Muslim Mental Health Conference will take place April 24-26 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Dearborn Inn in Dearborn.

The goal of the conference is to help promote access to mental health care among the Muslim community and provide first aid mental health training to imams, chaplains and community leaders in the state.

Special guests at the event will include Congressman John D. Dingell and City of Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, with keynote presentations from Chaplain Abdul-Rasheed Muhammad, director of the Chaplaincy Services Department of the Islamic Society of North America and Kameelah Mu’Min Rashad, founder of the Muslim Wellness Foundation, Inc.

Attendees will learn the latest research and treatment approaches in mental health care, as well as participate in discussions centered on better access to care, challenging stigmas and identifying resources to help educate those seeking services.

Online registration for the conference ends April 20. For more information, contact Farha Abbasi, assistant professor in MSU’s Department of Psychiatry, at (517) 353-5372.
