Joanna Young recommended as new MSU IT vice president

Joanna Young has been recommended to serve as Michigan State University’s vice president for information technology and chief information officer.

Currently the associate vice president for finance and budget and CIO at the University of New Hampshire, Young’s appointment is subject to approval by the MSU Board of Trustees. If approved, her appointment would be effective Aug. 26.

In her current position, Young oversees applications and infrastructure supporting all university functions, including learning management systems, distance learning, networks, servers and data centers.

“Joanna has extensive experience in information technology and brings a wealth of knowledge in technology, finance, strategic planning and program prioritization,” said Satish Udpa, MSU executive vice president for administrative services. “We are very pleased that she has agreed to take on this critical leadership role at Michigan State.”

Young has served as UNH’s chief information officer since May 2009 and associate vice president for finance and budget since September 2011.

Prior to that she was with the Liberty Mutual Group, where she served in a variety of roles, including vice president and manager, customer support services (2003-07), and chief information officer, corporate systems and shared services (2007-09).

Young led the largest federal grant in UNH history, a major cyber infrastructure expansion across the University System of New Hampshire and all 10 New Hampshire counties.

“The search committee was composed of various IT personnel, faculty, administrators and students,” said Karen Klomparens, dean of the MSU Graduate School who chaired the committee. “I’m happy that Joanna Young has agreed to accept this important position. She will be a real asset to MSU as we move forward.”

Young has a bachelor of science degree in business administration from UNH. She also completed the AICPCU Insurance Executive Program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

In her spare time Young can be found with her family – husband Darren and two daughters – or running, writing a novel, or re-reading the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
