Celebrating international children's literacy

For the sixth annual “One World; Many Stories” event, Red Cedar Elementary School, in East Lansing, will host a celebration of peace at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the school’s gym.

The event is free and open to the public, and will focus on the book, “Peace,” written by Michigan-based author and artist Wendy Anderson Halperin. It describes pathways to peace and includes inspirational quotes from civil rights leaders around the world.

Pizza will be available from 5:30 to 6 p.m. for $1 per plate, and the program will start at 6 p.m. Attendees will participate in dance demonstrations by international students from MSU and the Peaceful Sisters, a Michigan-based organization dedicated to expressing peace and understanding through dance.

“One World; Many Stories” is a community-based literacy program, geared toward young children of all cultures.

A partnership among MSU, East Lansing Public Library and Red Cedar Elementary School, the multicultural initiative promotes family reading practices with interactive events that expose children to a variety of cultures. Selected books highlight the importance of community participation and celebrate global citizenship and understanding.

The event is sponsored by Residence Education and Housing Services, Family Resource Center, Center for Language Teaching Advancement, Office for International Students and Scholars, City of East Lansing and Target.
