Campus bike cleanup starts May 5

The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety will perform the annual campus bike cleanup from May 5 through July 31. Bikes that are not registered with the department will be impounded whether they are attached to a bicycle rack or not. Impoundment will also include bikes that are in disrepair and not locked to a bicycle rack. Any bike in proper repair that is locked to a bicycle rack and is registered with a current and valid permit affixed will not be impounded. Students leaving campus for the summer should remove their bicycles from campus.

Bike impoundment is done per University Ordinance Number 33 Section 06. Every year hundreds of bikes are abandoned on campus. The university is required to impound these bikes in order to maintain a clean campus.

The week of April 28 DPS will tag bikes that are unregistered, unlocked or inoperable. The tag will notify the owner that if not removed or registered, their bike will be impounded beginning May 5.

Anyone interested in registering his or her bicycle may do so free of charge at the Department of Police and Public Safety or online at www.police.msu.edu. The permit will be delivered by standard mail. In order to register a bicycle, owners need to know the make, color and serial number. Serial numbers can typically be found on the underside of the bicycle frame. Bikes must have the permit properly affixed in order to avoid impoundment.

To retrieve impounded bicycles owners need to contact the Parking Office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Owners must provide proof of ownership, register the bicycle and pay the impound fee before the bike will be released. Locks will not be replaced.

Once bike impoundment is finished, a list will be published of all the bikes impounded. The list will be posted at www.police.msu.edu, Spartan Village Community Center, the Union, International Center, Student Services and the MSU Police lobby. This list will provide the make, color and impound location for each bicycle. Once this list is published, owners have 30 days to retrieve their bicycle. Bicycles that are not retrieved will be donated to MSU Salvage, the MSU Bike Project or, depending on the severity of disrepair, may be disposed of.

You may access the website at www.police.msu.edu for additional information on bike impoundment and registration details.
