Consensus All-American cornerback Darqueze Dennard, who became the first Spartan to win the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's best defensive back, has been selected Most Valuable Player (Governor's Award recipient) by his teammates at the annual Spartan Football Awards Banquet held April 27 before a crowd in excess of 800 at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. Honors College senior Mina Hirzel, who’s studying linguistics and neuroscience, has been awarded a Baggett Fellowship, a one-year post-baccalaureate research fellowship at the University of Maryland, College Park. Only two fellowships are awarded each year.
