Staff profiles: Matthew Fehrenbach

Mathew Fehrenbach’s career has reached new heights.

“Sixty or 70 feet up in the air – it’s very exhilarating,” said Fehrenbach, a worker at Infrastructure Planning and Facilities' Landscape Services who climbs and trims trees across MSU’s campus.

It wasn’t always that way. Like so many others, when Fehrenbach was in his early 20s he was still looking for a sense of direction.

“I went to LCC and started their landscape architecture program, and after going through it I found out it wasn’t what I wanted to do,” Fehrenbach said. “So I applied for the full-time arborist job at MSU.”

Fehrenbach was hired for the job four years ago, and he said he found his perfect fit. He enjoys both his work and the company of his coworkers.

“I work with a great group of guys who are very tightly-knit,” Fehrenbach said. “I come to work every day looking forward to what we have to do.”
While Fehrenbach said he’s happy in his current position, he remains interested in climbing upward.

“There’s definitely room for moving up at Michigan State,” Fehrenbach said. “There are opportunities to advance my career, and I do expect to be here for the long haul.”
