At its Jan. 25 meeting, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees authorized the university to pursue leasing 40,000 square feet of space in a downtown Flint building to house the MSU College of Human Medicine’s growing public health program.
The space in the former Flint Journal newspaper building will deepen the college’s presence in the Flint community, increasing the number of third- and fourth-year students and providing space for newly recruited MSU public health researchers.
MSU is working with the building owners, the nonprofit Uptown Reinvestment Corporation, on finalizing financing arrangements. The base rent will be paid with a grant.
Following are other actions taken by the board at the Jan. 25 meeting. The board:
- Authorized the university to begin planning for a north campus infrastructure project. The improvements include the replacement of deteriorating steam tunnels along West Circle Drive and East Circle Drive.
- Authorized the university to begin planning for several improvement projects at Munn Ice Arena. The work would include upgrades on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, as well as replacement of the ice-making system.
- Approved the awarding of a bid and contract for the reconstruction of the Bogue Street and Shaw Lane intersection, a project that includes the partial closing of Bogue Street. The contract was awarded to Triangle Associates, Inc.
- Awarded a bid and contract for a major renovation project on Butterfield Hall. The project will include major mechanical, electrical and ventilation upgrades, as well as the addition of life safety systems and Americans with Disabilities Act code-required modifications.
