Whopping $4 billion spent on political ads

An estimated $4 billion is being spent on political advertising during the 2012 election cycle, dwarfing the $500 million or so spent in 2008, Michigan State University advertising expert Robert Kolt says.

Kolt appears in one of a series of new short videos on the MSU election page. In addition to campaign advertising, new videos explore the Michigan ballot proposals to keep the emergency manager law and to require a two-thirds vote of the state Legislature to raise taxes.

In this video, Kolt, a veteran advertising instructor, said voters are being barraged with new ads every day.

“What we have seen now that we haven’t seen in years past is that there are new ads every day,” Kolt says. “The volume of creative production has been incredible. We’ll see new ads based on the demographic group, the channel, the region of the country.”

The complete list of election videos is here. Topics range from the youth vote to health care to shipping jobs overseas.

A host of MSU experts are available to speak to the media. See the list here.
