Michigan State University, in partnership with the Tokyo University of Agriculture, is hosting more than 50 students and 34 academic leaders from 27 countries on campus Oct. 1-5.
Historically, the International Student Summit on Food, Agriculture and the Environment has been held in Japan at the Tokyo University of Agriculture. This year, for the first time, the summit is being held outside of Japan.
The students will present research projects in the areas of food production and sustainable energy. They will spend Monday through Wednesday preparing for their presentations. Academic leaders from the students' home universities will spend those days with MSU and Tokyo University of Agriculture faculty members discussing food security, global climate change, crop protection and the role of women in agriculture.
On Oct. 4 and Oct. 5, students will present their research and engage in roundtable discussions on creative solutions to some of the world’s biggest food production and energy problems.
Throughout the week, the summit participants will have an opportunity to hear from many MSU and statewide leaders: MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon; Keith Creagh, director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources; Jamie Clover Adams, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; Jeffrey Riedinger, dean of International Studies and Programs; Satish Udpa, dean of the College of Engineering; and Doug Buhler, interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
