College of Music throws Mozart a birthday celebration

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State University College of Music will celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 255th birthday with performances of his well-loved chamber works featuring piano, winds and strings at "Happy Birthday Mozart" at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Music Building Auditorium.

The annual celebration, featuring Michael Kroth, bassoon; Dmitri Berlinsky, violin; Yuri Gandelsman, viola; Suren Bagratuni, cello; and pianists Deborah Moriarty and Derek Polischuk, includes performances of "Sonata for Bassoon and Cello" in B-flat major, "Sonata for Two Pianos" in D major and "Trio for Violin, Viola and Cello" in E-flat major. For a special treat, patrons will be invited to join the performers for birthday cake during intermission.

To learn more about Mozart and the history that surrounds him and his music, join Marcie Ray, assistant professor of historical musicology, at 6:45 p.m. in the Music Building Auditorium as she presents a preview lecture.

"Happy Birthday Mozart" is part of the Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series. The concert is sponsored by Suren Bagratuni.

Tickets, $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, are available at the College of Music, 102 Music Building, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free to students with ID and anyone under age 18.
