'A Chanticleer Christmas'

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Chanticleer, the world renowned and award-winning male a cappella vocal ensemble, will perform "A Chanticleer Christmas" 3 p.m. Dec. 5 at Wharton Center's Cobb Great Hall.

With its seamless blend of 12 male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as "an orchestra of voices."

The program's repertoire consists of both classical and contemporary carols. "Christmas Spiritual Medley," arranged by Grammy award-winning composer Joseph Jennings, fuses Southern Baptist traditional style with classical music. The performance also features many holiday favorites, including "Children Go Where I Send Thee," "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and Franz Biebl's famous composition of "Ave Maria."

Chanticleer was founded in San Francisco in 1978 by the late Louis Botto and consists of only 12 men. The group is globally recognized for its musical superiority in a variety of different vocal genres, including Renaissance, gospel, jazz, classical and contemporary. The group has performed in prestigious festivals and venues across the country and around the world, including Disney Concert Hall in 2003 and the Salzburg Festival in Austria in 1987.

There will be a preview lecture at this performance. The free, half-hour discussion will be lead by David Rayl, MSU professor of music, director of choral programs and associate dean for graduate studies and research. The lecture will take place 45 minutes prior to the performance in the Stoddard Grand Tier lounge on the third floor.
