Broadway professionals teach workshops at Wharton

“Take it From the Top,” a series of interactive workshops offered through the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union Institute for Arts and Creativity at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, gives people an opportunity to experience life on Broadway.

This year’s workshops take place July 29 through Aug.1 at Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre on the campus of MSU.

“Take it From the Top” was developed by Laura Bell Bundy, star of the Broadway version of “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” and Paul Canaan, a performer in both the Broadway and MTV versions of the musical.

Canaan and a team of Broadway professionals from New York will teach the workshops. The instructors have connections to such shows as “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “Miss Saigon,” and “La Cage Aux Folles,” among other productions.

Children, teens and adults will learn the craft of musical theater with basic to advanced skills, industry history and practical content in an interactive setting. The workshops offer participants a chance to experience Broadway with the professionals.

The cost for the four-day pre-teen and teen workshop is $320 and the two-day workshop for adults is $150. There are a limited amount of scholarships available.

Following workshops in East Lansing, the team will present a similar series of workshops at the Old Town Playhouse in Traverse City.
