Weeklong series of events marks International Education Week at MSU

From visiting diplomats and scholars to foreign films and food, events marking the sixth annual International Education Week fill the Michigan State University calendar from Nov. 12-20.

The events, most of which are free and open to the public, are intended to foster a greater sense of global community and to demonstrate the value of international connections to the MSU campus and Michigan generally.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study and learn in the United States. MSU’s global focus includes one of the largest U.S. study abroad programs and more than 1,300 faculty engaged in international work.

Highlights of this year’s event include:

  • Global Festival 2005 (Nov. 13, noon, MSU Union) – MSU students, representing dozens of countries around the world, will share their culture and talents with exhibits, performances and children’s activities.

  • Post Cold War Europe and U.S. Interests (Nov. 14, 2 p.m., MSU International Center, Third Floor) – Presentation by two retired career ambassadors, both of whom are MSU alumni. Richard C. Barkley was most recently U.S. ambassador to Turkey, and previously was the last U.S. ambassador to the German Democratic Republic before German reunification. John C. Kornblum was most recently U.S. ambassador to reunified Germany.

  • Bird Flu: The Next Pandemic? (Nov. 17, 2 p.m., MSU International Center, Third Floor)– Panel discussion of experts from MSU and the Michigan Department of Community Health on the human health risk of avian influenza, or bird flu.
  • Beyond Google: Electronic Resources Training Workshops in Japanese and Chinese Language Materials for Research and Teaching (Nov. 18, 9 a.m., Wells Hall, Room B100B) – Hands-on workshops will introduce participants to digital resources available for teaching and research on Japan and China, including government and private sites displaying content in Japanese, Chinese and English.
